Islam and Women
The question of the place of women in Muslim religion is caught in a squeeze: on one side, the golden legend claims that Islam honored women by granting them rights they previously did not have; on the other side, the black legend argues that women are oppressed and treated as beings inferior. Between these two opposing views, what do the Islamic texts truly say? In this section, we will review the Quran, the Hadiths, and the Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh) corpus in order to answer the question as accurately as possible. Marriage, repudiation, polygamy, consent, domestic violence, subordination to the husband, the rights and duties of the wife, sexual slaves… we will address all these topics and many more without any taboos.
