SLAVERY
While slavery is considered reprehensible by the majority of individuals today and is almost universally prohibited around the world (notably with some exceptions in certain African and Near Eastern countries), it was long practiced by many peoples across a wide variety of cultures. Although everyone is familiar with the slave trades orchestrated by Europeans during the Age of Discovery and colonization, those carried out by the Arab-Muslim world are much less known, and they concern both Black Africa and the Mediterranean basin. In this section, we will present the history of slavery in the Muslim context and examine the status of the slave – and of slavery – in Islamic texts.
