LATE ANTIQUITY
To understand the emergence of Islam, it is essential to examine the environment in which it gradually appeared in the 7th century. Islam was born within a specific historical context: that of the ancient Near East. It is therefore within this vast crossroads of cultures, religions, and peoples that we must reconstruct the birth of Islam. At that time, the Orient was experiencing great upheavals: wars, famines, and natural disasters raged and fueled beliefs in the end times everywhere. The Churches were more divided than ever, and several currents faced each other within Christianity itself. Studying this context leads us to ask the following questions: what were the prevalent beliefs at the time? What was the geopolitical situation of the Near East? The answers to these questions open interesting avenues for better tracing the history of Islam.
