THE TRANSMISSION OF THE QURAN
According to Sunni tradition, the Quran was miraculously preserved by the Prophet's companions after his death. Thus, the text we possess today would faithfully correspond to the message conveyed by Muhammad. However, this version is now being challenged by historical research. The examination of Muslim sources reveals internal contradictions and inconsistencies that cast doubt on their reliability. The study of manuscripts and ancient sources shows that, in the early centuries of Islam, there were several competing versions of the Quran. Finally, the Muslim tradition itself acknowledges the existence of variants, forgotten passages, scribal errors, and even deliberate falsifications, which should lead us to seriously question the authenticity of the Quranic text. Considering all these elements demonstrates that the history of the Quran is far more complex than traditional Muslim sources suggest, extending throughout the 7th century and possibly beyond, long after the Prophet’s death.
